Valley of Fire State Park is a public recreation and nature preservation located 1 hour north of Las Vegas. The name is taken from the red sandstone formations, the Aztec Sandstone, which appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays. There are several rock art carvings (Petroglyphs) on rock surfaces from the prehistoric inhabitants of the Valley of Fire (Ancestral Puebloans - also known as the Anasazi) who occupied the area from 300 BC to 1150 AD. The day I visited was well over 100 degrees and I saw multiple Petroglyphs on multiple rock formations along with Lizards, Ram and other wildlife. The large rock pictured has multiple carvings along the top half.
